The civic health department has identified 22 suspected cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare immunological nerve disorder that causes sudden numbness and muscle weakness. The majority of cases are from the Sinhgad Road area and eight patients currently require ventilator support. Most patients are between 12 and 30 years of age, with one case involving a 59-year-old.

A dedicated committee of experts, comprising scientists from the National Institute of Virology (NIV) and epidemiologists, is conducting surveillance. Patient samples have been sent to the ICMR-NIV for further testing and analysis.

Experts note that bacterial and viral infections, including influenza, rotavirus, dengue, and chikungunya can trigger GBS when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks nerve cells. Contaminated food and water are also potential risk factors, underscoring the importance of stringent hygiene practices.

“GBS will not lead to an epidemic or pandemic. With treatment, most people recover fully from the condition.” - Dr. Nina Borade, Chief of the Civic Health Department

For healthcare professionals, early recognition is crucial. Monitor patients, especially those who recently had an infection or present with unexplained weakness for rapidly progressive limb or respiratory muscle involvement. In most cases, supportive care such as antibiotics, IV fluids, and paralysis management ensures a favorable prognosis.
