The Government of India has launched a new National Medical Register (NMR) as an all-encompassing online database replacing fragmented and siloed records in the current Indian Medical Register. The new platform will implement Aadhaar ID verification for doctors, authenticating the identities of medical professionals to improve security and accelerate healthcare data management throughout India.

Launched on August 23, 2024, the NMR is proposed to be a National composite listing of all allopathic (MBBS Graduate) Doctors registered and eligible for Medical Practise in India.

The National Medical Commission Act (NMC) 2019 has developed the NMR in response to years of demand for an updated and reliable database on India's approximately 1.3 million doctors. This information is digitized and centralized to provide better coordination ultimately leading to improved quality healthcare access in an affordable manner.

Registered doctors in the past will have to re-register themselves on this new dedicated platform and future updates are expected which would bring software integration solutions and continuing medical education tools. The National Medical Register (NMR) is a step forward towards digitalisation of health care delivery in India and may be extended to other healthcare professionals soon.
