Dr. Rakesh Kapoor is the Medical Director Medanta Lucknow and Director Division of Urology & Kidney Transplant, Medanta Lucknow. He has a distinguished academic career, is a winner of Hewitt Gold Medal & the PMS Association Gold Medal (1979) for obtaining highest marks in MBBS and Babu Kanshi Ram Dhawan Gold Medal (1984) for being in order of merit in M.S. (General Surgery) from the erstwhile King George Medical College, Lucknow. Post completing his M.Ch. in Urology from PGIMER, Chandigarh, he joined the prestigious Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute in the year 1988 as a faculty at the Department of Urology.Dr Kapoor ranks among the pioneers in the field of healthcare and administration and has been a member of World Health Organization Sub-committee (1998). He has also been granted various international fellowships like JICA Fellowship in Urology (Japan), Chakraborty Travelling Fellowship by Indo-American Urologic Association and Endo-Urology Society Fellowship in 1999 (USA). He has been conferred with the prestigious Fellowship of National Academy of Medical Sciences, India (FAMS-2005) and Fellowship of National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad (FNASc 2007).As Head of the Department of Urology, since 2006, he was instrumental in setting up the Renal Transplant Programme as well as cadaveric transplant programme in North India. He introduced various laser technologies for urological surgeries, including KTP laser for prostate surgery, holmium laser for prostate and stone diseases. He was also instrumental in setting up of Paediatric Urology, Female Reconstructive Urology and Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeries at SGPGIMS, which is first of its kind in North India. Under his leadership, SGPGI witnessed more than 2700 kidney transplantation, 1200 laparoscopic donor nephrectomies.Dr Kapoor has been honoured with the prestigious Vigyan Gaurav Samman (2009), Vigyan Ratna Samman (2010), Yash Bharti Samman (2016) and Dr BC Roy National Award for Eminent Teacher (2017). He took the voluntary retirement from the post of the Director, Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute and HOD Urology & Renal Transplantation where, he contributed significantly towards achieving the mission of extending the advanced, high-tech and multi-disciplinary health care services for which the institution is prominently known.
